Though not a direct solution for you, you might want to look into (or having) written a tag in Java either as a CFX or possibly through the <cfimport> as a JSP tag.

There's a great article at
<a href="" that discusses using a Java swing application in a simple JNI-based package to acquire TWAIN images.  Using that information, it should be possible to create a ColdFusion interface that would not only acquire scan's,  but images from other twain sources as well.
