As somebody who works for a relatively small company, even we are willing to
listen. I received a call from our Macomedia regional sales rep (I'm in New
York City), and we had a great discussion regarding Flex pricing (among
other things). The bottom line is that the $12,000 price tag is *not*
necessarily what you will pay. We haven't discussed hard final numbers yet,
but our final price probably won't come anywhere near that number if we
decide to pursue Flex development.

Further, let's say the typical development environment has a staging and
production server, each with a single CPU. That $12K price tag is for 2
CPUs, and you are allowed to split across multiple servers. So, for all
intents and purposes, you're really paying $6K per server (again, at
wholesale with zero discount).

Look, I can't say I'm ecstatic with the pricing. But I can also at least see
MM's justification for setting the price at what they did. Don't agree with
it? No problem. Have a look at Laszlo and give them your money instead.
Another company by the name of New Atlanta entered the ColdFusion market a
few years ago with a focus on delivering a CF implementation for MM
customers who couldn't afford to keep up with the pricing (among other
reasons, of course), and they've managed to do quite well for themselves. If
MM has truly erred in their pricing strategy, they'll know it over the
coming quarters when revenues don't match expectations and re-work their
strategy accordingly.

Regards,
Dave.
