On the upside, there are a number of people talking about the need for digital dashboards. The reason for this IMHO, is as our information systems have begun to collect better and more accurate information, someone/something still needs to sift through the information and provides meeing. In knowledge management circles they call this information pollution.
With that said, Flex seems targets at application developers who need to provide meaning for stuff with a ton of data points. (You could debate if it is better for more application oriented items)
What applications would you an I need that requires crunching a lot of numbers and providing that information in a meaningful way? It seems to me that many of these applications will be business oriented instead of oriented at consumers (not to say that there are not good examples in for the need for this type of application in the personal finance arena, for example).
But I think you're right on the downside of these applications. Not all businesses or organizations have access to fat pipes.
