Apparently media player 6-8 had a security flaw that allowed malicious
people/content to interact with the Local Zone. I think that the autoplayer
feature of MP 8.0 was disabled when bundled with XP Pro. Upgraded to 9.0 and
the sounds play again. Found this link below which helped.

Subject: Embedded wav files not playing

Weird one:

    A certain page has a wav embedded in it for audible notification of the
user.
    This page executes great with NT and IE 6.0.2. in the following format
        <embed src="" width="0" height="0"
hidden="true" autostart="true" volume="50">

  The sounds cannot be heard when the page renders in XP and IE 6.0.2. and
media player 8.0

   If I put the path of the wav in the browser and directly render it, it
plays fine.

    Anyone have any ideas?

John
