the base implementation of Java. I believe it was added pre Java 2,
but don't quote me on that. I do know that AWT "expects" an X server,
which would be x11 or xfree86... or, I assume, windows.
The thing is that Java can be installed on so-called headless systems
without a monitor or a GUI. In those cases there are classes, which I
understand to also be shipped with the JRE which, emulate what would
otherwise have been done by the X server.
That's one of the reasons why this particular problem has me confused
at the moment. I think there's a good chance some of my assumptions
are incorrect.
If I find a clearly repeatable problem and solution I'll either update
my website (alagad.com) or the Alagad Image Component docs.
