I use Eclipse daily on my Mac and don't experience any performance problems.
However, it really depends on what you are doing. The Java functionality
built into Eclipse is awesome, but it adds a lot of overhead. All of that
can be fixed by tweaking your configuration. I point this out because it
isn't Eclipse that may be the cause of the slowness on your machine, but in
fact the plugins you have configured for use with it. Not all plugins are
created equal and some do much more work than they need to.

We consider performance problems to be bugs and aggressively work to make
sure He3 performs as expected. I believe that He3 meets and exceeds the
expected performance requirements of your average developer when used on an
adequately equipped machine.
