I was very involved with Apple at the time Jobs left -- I thought it
was the best thing that had ever happened at Apple.
The other best thing was when he returned several years later.
In the intervening years Apple stagnated, likely from lack of
vision/confidence of top management.
Apple's initial visionary management team (Mike Markula, Mike Scott,
Gene Carter, Will Houd, etc. were no longer active). Woz was gone (in
and out) so there was no longer any driving technical force.
Apple was going off in several directions, false starts, actually,
trying to build a new OS and the world's ugliest and heaviest laptops.
Meanwhile, Steve, Bought Pixar, and created Next -- both pioneering
firms. Next built a new computer and a new OS as well as a very good
IDE. -- In fact the www was developed on a Next box (the www, not the
Internet). Next was successful & so was Pixar.
Steve matured, honed his management skills, and maintained his vision.
When he sold Next to Apple and came back as Amelio's assistant -- he
was exactly what was needed -- and Apple got a modern OS in the deal
too.
If Steve is a nut, then most of his industry peers are squirrels!

That little kid is in his early 50s -- he is a self made millionaire,
several times over, and has led several successful companies -- and he
brought Apple back from the brink.
I'd say, based on his track record, he competes just fine.
Remember, Apples rebirth occurred during some pretty lean years for
Silicon Valley and the computer industry. Where are the Compacs, the
Digital equipments, etc.

You need to get out more-- the worlds 3rd fastest computer was not
built by little children playing with toys.
