Is this possible with _javascript_?

Is it possible with a Java applet?
-- certainly
If not possible with a plugin, could _javascript_ invoke a desktop player
(WMP or QT) and pass it the song.
-- methinks the 'security model' says no way
If none of the above, is there any other way?
-- Director &/or Flash (separately or in concert) both will give you
complete control over both the streaming & user interface components.
