Thank you for your link suggestion. It was very helpful. I finally had time to investigate the error further and I found the answer, as described below.
Error message:
An exception occurred when instantiating a Com object.
The cause of this exception was that: AutomationException: 0x80070005 - General access denied error.
Solution:
1. Go to Start > Run > dcomcnfg
2. On the default security tab, edit the default access permissions and the default launch permissions. For both of these, give the user account that ColdFusion logs in as Allow Access and Allow Launch permissions.
3. Bounce the CFMX service
Alternatively, if you want to try to lock down security, you can try to do a similar procedure using the Applications tab in dcomcnfg.
