Try Googling "IE cache document download". Second and third links are to
MS articles on download Word and PDF documents via https links. Perhaps
they will offer some clues to pursue.

Nope, I'm not using any <cfheader> or <meta> tags to control caching.  

I've actually built a simple page that includes very little content.
Even hard-coding the path to the PDF rather than building it from db
values, just to limit the number of unknowns.
