The beautiful thing about message boards is that there are innumerable examples of them in use all over the Internet. My suggestion would be to look at a wide variety of boards, not just in CF. Get a sense for exactly what features you want, then mock up screens for the application using paper and pencil. Build enough mockup screens to cover everything a user would conceivably see in the application.
As you go through the exercise, you will begin to see the design of the application emerge. Break it down into parts- users, profiles, groups, posts, threads, topics, and examine how they interact in some working samples. The exercise will help you understand the design of the application, and the application architecture will flow from the functional design. A side benefit of your research will be an undertanding of what is fashionable in message board application functionality and why.
One other thought, and forgive me if you posted this earlier and I missed it, but use a single framework to build your apps. My personal preference as a manager is to use something well documented, and many of the frameworks discussed on the list are that.
