I'm joining the party late, but is the efficiency of submitting
comments much of a concern?  Unless you've got one hell of a busy
blog, even several hundred milliseconds is perfectly fine, because
it's not going to happen all that much.

If you look at stock MT, when a comment is submitted, it not only
records it in the database, but then also rebuilds the static pages in
the site so that the comment counts for the entry is updated.  I don't
know how long that actually takes, but it's at least several seconds
for large blogs.
