I've worked with MySQL quite a bit over the past few years.  However, all the application I've worked on with it were using session variables.  I do believer that MySQL should be good for what you want.  However, missing client variables might be coding problem as Gonzo mentioned.  What version of  CF are you running 5 or MX?
