That's an unofficial estimate from Macromedia I think, based on the
number of servers sold and the number of developer editions downloaded
and some guesstimate of how many developers use shared servers.

I seem to recall reading there were "millions" of Java programmers
(3-5m I think) and certainly at one time there were more C / C++
programmers than Java programmers. No idea whether that's true now.

If you think that the number of advertised jobs indicates the number
of programmers for any given language (I don't), then this web site
