I reset the Airport router and the DSL modem, etc. & problem persisted
-- really weird.

Reloaded Airport software.

Tried several different browsers -- same results.

Couldn't get to localhost or any of my fixed IP addresses -- but could
still get to a few web sites

Went to another computer -- no problems.

Decided to restart the problem computer but Safari browser wouldn't
quit (restart aborted).

Manually killed Safari & was going to continue restart -- on a whim I
opened another browser -- everything worked???

Started Safari -- it worked too???

I never did restart the system.  Apparently  Safari was doing something
(memory leak, overloading ports, etc).

Don't know the cause, but it is gone now.

Thanks for the ideas -- gives me some things to try next time it
happens.

The only other times I saw anything like this since (some sites
available, many others not) since 1996 were:

1) When a backhoe took a major cable in Mawah
2) When some Major DNS master servers went into a tailspin over a
holiday weekend

But this time it appears it was in my box!
