Schneegans with links to cf tag store have prompted me to attempt to
start my first thread.
Over a year ago now I made a New Years resolution that I would start
posting tags on either Macromedia exchange or sites like cftagstore. My
thought was I could do some basic tags, apps for free, and others for a
fairly cheap price. I could at worst have something else to put on a
resume or in a portfolio and at best make some side money. I had/have a
few tags and apps lying around in various stages of done-ness. I never
seem to find the time to get any to the point that they are documented
and ready for upload.
Now over a year later, I am pretty happy with my job, not leaving in the
foreseeable future, and am less worried about a portfolio builder but
would still be interested in posting some side projects if there was at
least a minimal return. I already have a second job and get paid an
hourly rate for that, so even though some of my tags and apps are more
fun to work on than the second job I have trouble justifying the time
and effort.
What have some of you experienced with trying to sell pre-packed tags
and apps, aimed at other developers (so as not to get too, too far into
support issues). I am sure some of my ideas are out there somewhere but
I do have a few that I think are kind of unique. For example
A project management app that asks for a location of a dev site or app
(ftp, local, or unc) and a prod site or app (ftp, local or unc). It
shows (prod files side by side with dev) mod date / times, highlights
which is more recent, shows if a file is unique to just dev or just
prod. It can push files forward, roll files back, and logs it all.
A web app that is a scaled down version of studio for use when you
aren't near a computer that has your dev tools. It lets you edit code
online with line numbering, upload/download code, manipulate the
directory structure, explore datasources, etc.
A custom tag that takes a table name, and database type and draws a cf
grid like html table that allows you to sort, update, add, delete info.
And there are a few others.
So I guess my question is two fold, what have any of you found in trying
to sell on the side, specifically tags and apps aimed at other
developers. And I know it is tough with out seeing any of them, but I
guess the 3 offerings I mentioned above are what I would consider my
"coolest" and most unique tags. I use all 3 almost every day for
something or the other and so they are priceless to me. Do they sound
like something other developers might want or need? Or should I stick
with my day (and primary night job).
Thanks for any and all feedback.
