A gig of RAM isn't going to cut it. Nor will one machine.
On the other hand, MySQL WILL handle it - but you're going to need an equal
or better machine to run the database. Slashdot gets much more than six page
views per second, and they're humming away quite nicely. You can think of
MySQL as a very, very fast filesystem with minimal security and
transactional support. Michael's more than a little off with MySQL being a
small fry, but he's right on with the need for extremely fast HD's. ;)
Send your people off to VA Linux and get the nicest database server you can
get (quad Xeon's of the fastest variety) and at least two of the type of web
server you're thinking of. You'll probably also want to get them a NetApp
and a backup DB server. And if they're doing anything with transactions
(e-commerce, business/financial data, etc.) tell them to go buy Oracle and
an E6500.
You might even want to look at having another HTTP only server that you
publish the static pages to, which might take alot of the load off and make
having one CF server more likely, but it's pushing it.
