It makes sense that you have to put it in quotes. What if the variable is NOT defined?
If you didn't put it in quotes that would cause an error! You are calling a function
(IsDefined) on an expression. That expression is trying to use a variable that is not
defined!
By putting it in quotes it is just a string.
