first java class in college back in like, 97 or so, and when they were
talking about how Java didn't have pointers, the whole class broke out into
applause...
I do not think a bunch of students is competent to judge if something can be good or not.
Take the same class, tell them they will study a new version of English language in which
grammar has been abolished, and they will probabily all applause. This doesn't prove grammar is bad or useless in a language.
