Speaking as someone that has just inherited a very short (5 day) contract to
fix up some old php, and I have to say, I am such a happy puppy that I chose
not to develop in PHP full time.

At this point it's probably best to note that we also run PHP on our server
so that when we take custom off of our competitors that use PHP, we can do
it with the minimum of fuss and then re-write the app in CF at leisure. It
niggles me that we have to run it at all but we've had to compromise to get
the custom as if we made people wait to switch whilst we re-wrote the site,
we'd lose the business.

Anyway back to the point.... without exception, every site we have re-built
in CFMX from a PHP ancestry has had a) a smaller final code base (mainly due
to excellent code reuse) b) greater functionality (again, you gotta love the
code re-use factor of CFMX) c) more stability and reliability (in my
experience CFMX just works... PHP on the other hand needs a lot of
babysitting) d) a major speed increase e) better architecture (code re-use
again cfcs rock!).

The speed is the one that our customers notice the most and it kinda proves
the point to them, but the other points I mention make an easier life for us
as maintenance of CFMX is low to nil even when you include the patching
process.

Certainly moving away from PHP has been a great benefit to most of our
customers that didn't come to us in the first place.

Overall, our investment in CF has paid for itself many times over in shorter
(re)development times and better application maintenance which lets us
provide a better service to more people in less time. In my years as a
contractor, I haven't come across a single PHP project that I would say is
well written but then I am the one going in and fixing the problems because
the developers that built the PHP in the first place have gone out of
business or just aren't being responsive to the problems they've created...
