I'm pretty sure Michael uses iMS mail server software, which uses 
ColdFusion, etc, to do the basics.  We use iMS, www.coolfusion.com , 
too.  Pretty neat way to do mail.  We developed broadcast and discussion CF 
list apps.  (Too crude to share.)  I think Cool Fusion's Free FusionMail2 
(a CF app) comes with a discussion list feature.  That might help you see 
how to do a broadcast list server.  The archives to the iMS list have lots 
of discussion on bouncing mail, etc.  iMS is used to drive some very large 
lists.
