It seems to be an interesting situation. I'm thinking loud here, in addition to backup, for performing other heavy duty db job as well, another option might be: 1) schedule the backup or other similar db job; 2) disable ALL web app services for the interval (done via server admin? global approach)
Maybe there's other better alternatives, I can't think at the moment.
