I used to do pseudo web services a long time ago.... I wrote some applications that could be called via a CFHTTP form request, and returned data in WDDX format... Before Amazon had their web service, there was CF_AMAZON... the CF_AMAZON tag actually contacted my server, which went out and screenscraped data from amazon, and returned a query formatted as a WDDX packet.
