You might also want to consider possible security changes between the two. It's possible that 2003 might be more strict in some way.
Also (and forgive me if this sounds stupid) but have you made sure that Word works (on the server)? I've seen people complain that it wasn't in cases like this only to find out that they installed it on the server, but never activated it.
