For some time now I've been planning to write a UDF that allows a Query column to be "cast" into a type to get around the problems that sometimes occur when creating a query with queryNew() (e.g. numerics sorting as strings etc). I know this is planned for a fix in Blackstone (according to Ben's blog) but not everyone will be able to upgrade and I could probably use it right now.
