I've done this in the past by setting the table background to the underlying 
image, and then drawing the overlaying image in the table as an <img>

This doesn't work for watermarking (since you want the overlay to be part of 
the image in case of "save image as"), but if you are just looking for visual 
effect, this works fine.

In the new, modern world of CSS, there are a number of ways to handle this as 
well.

Actually Jerry, you could be right, are you thinking of just overlaying it 
using dhtml? I'll look at both options - it may look tidier if i did it on the 
fly but could be server heavy.
