That's pretty much spot on. If it wasn't for the complete asshats who are either 12 year olds "playing hacker" with an automated tool, or a professional spammer trying to game Google into getting their or their client's links higher in Google results, we wouldn't need a system like this. But of course, with all things good some asshat has to do his best to ruin it. In my case, it was more important to turn away a small (but nonetheless significant, of course) minority of visitors in order to accept comments at all. The other alternative was to simply close commenting all together, which was completely unacceptable to me.
