I used Flash XML sockets for this in the past. It was a digital conferencing system by Philips. The system pushed DDE packets over Netbui which we intercepted with a custom made socket on the server. Flash connected to our sockets, and we then pushed our xml over that connection. We used this for live feeds with government meetings. People also could control the 360c camera with it.
But in your case, I might look at XML RPC with Javascript or XMLHttpRequest. I am doing the exact same for a content management system.
