Apparently the answer to this question is "yes"--it turns out that I can successfully query some of the collections that were delivered to me, but not others (and of course the two I'm most needing to use are ones that don't work!), so I'm just going to have follow up with the person who generates them and see what's going on. If there's some "gotcha" to report related to all of this I'll be sure and pass it along.
