What you're misssing is that you're unlikely to have direct access to the DNS for all of your clients. You need to set up these host names under your _own_ domain name, or else you'll find yourself needing to contact the client's domain administrator, which gets ugly fast. And is unnecessary. Like I said before, the host names you choose could be generic names, or they could be names reflecting the client name. For instance
sbo.whitestonemedia.com might be the host name for the Shellman Bluff Outfitters development site.
