If you are running on a windows environment you might attempt to use something like this: http://www.tabslab.com/en/product/upload10/ Since you can invoke com objects from coldfusion it should be possible to use it.
I am using this on one of our sites and it works great and you get a progress bar, but it's a asp site, so your milage may vary.
