I think the privacy laws are going this direction - if they are not already there.
ie no warehousing of customer data unless the customer allows it. and I think it periodically needs to be reviewed (ie annually). so if the customer only wants to provide detailed information fo a specific reason - the company gaining the information can only use this information for that specific function. ie shipping a purchased good.
