I hate to be the bad one and support Macromedia, but they have a business model
they want to protect and valuable one for all of their livelyhoods. When you
buy the software - you are buying a LICENSE that allows you to use it.
Licenses are crazy, but if you want to use that software you have to agree to
it. Enough on that - I'm sure everybody knows that.
Secondly, the $25 they want to transfer the license to a different platform
probably didn't cover the cost of the phone call you made to them. Operating a
call centre is very expensive and Macromedia is a "small" company when
comparing the "fishes of the sea".
Thirdly, anybody who's ever created anything for free or for profit - wants to
get compensated for their time spent and the lack thereof of time spend for fun
and with family. I understand that in this time and day - honesty is not a
wide-spread virtue any more. I'm sure that's why MM has a digital rights
management system in place to protect their software.
Lastly, I was personally involved in a copyright disagreement last summer ('04)
regarding a website that I have designed pro-bono for a non-profit. Every bone
in my body was hurt terribly by this blatant infrigement I believed they
comitted. Sadly in this day and age, I can really no longer take someone's
word for it any more - despite how badly I want to believe. As a perspective,
just look at how many pre-nuptuals are being signed.
