Okay Just a quick overview of how I would approach this setup
As I have done it before :-)
First, Get mySQL, read over the documentation get mySQL setup
properly configured with proper permissions and administrators
and all that fun stuff.
Then, Get Apache installed and configured securely check out
Bugtraq for any new bugs patch emm, fix it all up get your
permissions and home directories worked out make sure Apache
supports DSO, so that you can use the ColdFusion module.
There are notes on how to configure Apache on your
most typical Linux distro int he 4.5 release notes.
then Install ColdFusion and test it out running w/Apache
and make sure ColdFusion, and Apache behave very well.
Now you can glue it all toghether by finding the 4.5 release notes
and following the simple instructions they have here.
"Configuring MySQL data sources on ColdFusion Server for Linux"
That is the heading you want to find in the release notes :)
I would post it here but I dont want to post redundant info to
the list. Allaire has ODBC drivers by Merant, and mySQL
has ODBC drivers called myODBC, so you actually have a choice.
Thats it, its not for the faint of heart and you have
to pay attention and be security concious or your box will
be secure (just as a NT box would)
Apache and MySQL, have wonderful documentation it may take a
little searching but I have met no great difficulty getting
either to work.
ColdFusion is a Binary installed program that should be
as simple as running the install script.

Jesse, it would be great to find an article about having mySQL, ColdFusion
and Linux integrating on a plattform from Allaire. I am coming from the
Windows world and I find it extremely difficult to get such a machine in
this combination up and running. I doesn't have to be necessarily a rule and
guide-paper. A Tips and Tricks paper with cooking advice would be enough.
Possible ?
For me personally the standard documentation Allaire provided especially on
the Linux OS version isn't very helpful. (It is more or less the same book
that you deliver with Windows with a bit Linux on top...)
I gave up reading it. Just a feedback.
