My fear is that they are looking for old browsers with vulnerabilities (like cross site scripting) and trying to steal cookies etc.

I don't see how they can do you any actual damage unless they somehow intercept orders intended for you. I know that search-engine optimization methods used to include strategies like this, I think to make it look like there are lots of domains mirroring your content which somehow boosts the ranking. I thought the search engines had pretty much kiboshed that kind of bullshit by now, but maybe this is a leftover from a search-engine company you hired some time ago?
