I can definitely understand that, however I would also rather be referring to a single doctor by doctors.firstname as well.

My contention here is that if you're going to use a singular name, it doesn't make sense to call the collection after the entities it contains. A collection of doctors is not a doctor, hence it makes no sense to call such a collection "doctor".
