Well the context of the conversation was reasons why we individually
choose to use singular or plural naming conventions for database
tables. In that context I was commenting that my own reason is partly
related to notational consistency due to the possibility that I might
want to automate the relationship between a table and a class. In this
case the consistency of plurals is not a red herring -- it's part of
my reason for choosing singular table names (the subject), not a
comment about the nature of human language (not the subject). On the
other hand, comments about plurals not being inconsistent from a
linguistic standpoint are a red herring: what language scholars think
on the subject of plurals has no bearing on software automation.
