In defense of my words being twisted in support of other assertions. 
I don't really think that this represents poor design in ColdFusion,
and definitely doesn't deserve all this banner waving and general
freaking out.  It may be an undesirable behavior, but it's pretty
common knowledge and expected behavior.

This memory behavior has been consistant across every version of
ColdFusion since the application scope was introduced.  Acting
suprised and appaled about this issue only indicates a lack of
experience.  However, that doesn't mean we can't suggest that a change
in behavior be considered for future versions - or that a solution
would be welcome.

We've all done a pretty good job of describing the problem here, it
may be a good idea to chill out a bit on the kicking and screaming and
allow some folks to suggest some solutions.  Looks like Sean's
suggested some other great options for helping solve the problem.
