Thanks to all of you for your help. Although it was a fresh install, there were 3 versions of the Java SDK installed on the server. I uninstalled them and rebooted and it began working. Perhaps someone can shed some light on why this is the case? I had thought that the various Java installs were agnostic. Perhaps it was something I had inadvertently added to my class path... althought it looked normal to me - with everything pointing to "application.home" .... hmmm...
