Mark - The problems you are seeing are very odd and at this point I'd say it's very unlikely that it's a code problem is your hello world text didn't even show up. I would double and triple check all of your file paths and filenames and make sure you are editing the files you think you are, and that they are where you think they are in the browser, and that the paths all matchup.
Does this application work in your local dev environment? Also, you don't happen to have an Application.cfc file in that dir do you?
