With me money! Lovely, round, golden money! > How are most of you structuring your payments for a new customer? Do you > always get a deposit before starting on a site? Do you get the balance > paid > before the site goes live? or within say 10 days after go live? since you > can always take the site down for non-payment. If at all possible I prefer to get paid by the hour - it makes scope creep profitable and cuts down on arguments. For new clients I'll ask for a portion up front (say 10 hours) as a retainer then bill weekly. For known clients I'll just bill weekly. When I do work on fixed bid I generally prefer a payment plan of some kind depending on the duration of the work. For example I've a $5,000 a year contract to work with a local non-profit here and I get five checks cut starting in June (their business is seasonal and most of the work comes in the end of the year). For shorter contracts I generally ask for a portion up front and then a portion at each milestone. Essentially they pay to get me started and then pay whenever I hand over something "useful". Business Requirements, Initial Design/Prototype, Working System, Deployed System, etc. Basically at any of the milestone points they have the choice to take what's been completed so far and cut me off the project if they like. The check is to begin the next phase in a sense. No matter how you work it the key is to get everything in writing and agreed upon by BOTH parties first. Spend the time to make damn sure they understand their responsibilities in the engagement.
