Actually, when buying multiple copies, it's cheaper. They have great support too, although it can be a bit slow (they're in France, if I remember). But they've produced at least three minor revisions since I bought my copies last year, and each revision had cool new features. I've also yet to see any bugs, which is saying a lot. If you want to get into their arcane scripting language, you can do just about anything you want, which is reminscent of ER/Studio (had a VBScript-like language built in). It has an open data model for the diagram metadata. > Is JDeveloper really free, as in, not demo-ware or cripple-ware, but free > for commercial use? Is it appropriate for general purpose system modeling, > not making use of its Oracle-db-and-ADF-specific java generation? JDeveloper can easily and cleanly be used for just about any kind of Java development, but obviously, it works best with Oracle. It's free for development use. I.e., if you're using it for development, not production, it's free. Keep in mind, it's pretty low-cost for the kind of tool you get. It's essentially JBuilder on steroids. It was a split off the Borland JBuilder product a few years back, but I think it's eclipsed JBuilder now. The "big three" Java tools are JBuilder, JavaStudio (Sun) and JDeveloper. JDeveloper used to be $5,000.00 per seat, but now is $995.00 per seat. Still not free, but not bad if you're looking for something first class. Assuming you don't use it for production use, you can use it all you want. It's a free download on Oracle TechNet (www.oracle.com/otn). The data modeling tool in it (UML-based, of course) was intended to replace Oracle Designer, and that WAS about the best data modeling tool in existence at one time (it's desupported now). I think InfoWorld (or eWeek) had a review of the big three in the past couple of months; you might check that out too. thanks, bruce ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Discover CFTicket - The leading ColdFusion Help Desk and Trouble Ticket application http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=48 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:207373 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
