Tony, I had implemented BBML and emoticons in CFMBB (www.cfmbb.org), and had intended to implement private messaging too. However, I've since halted development on cfmbb because I worked too hard to seperate language and locale from the code itself, and therefore the code is the ugliest code I've ever written. Plus I simply don't have time to do the work on it, and I was more interested in writing a blog software (blogcfm) which was much easier =)
