If you open a Unix text file with the Windows application Notepad, you won't see the intended newlines because of the difference between the way newlines are handled on Windows and Unix. Windows uses ASCII characters 13 and 10, while Unix just uses 10 if I recall correctly. So you get one big line with a bunch of unprintable characters in it.
