I've had similar issues with using / generating xml with Coldfusion. For your particular issue, I used the <cfsilent> tag as well as <cfsetting enabledebuggingoutput="no"> to stop any extra characters from showing up...
I believe it was Emmet who actually found some hidden characters before the xml that couldn't be seen in notepad with a hex editor...
