While I don't doubt that BD may be faster than CFMX, I simply cannot
see BD as a better product. I've found it to have a significantly
higher number of bugs than CFMX, and while many of these bugs wouldn't
affect many developers, they're still bugs, which indicates some kind
of problems in the development process (lack of comprehensive
regression testing, for example). I should also clarifiy by saying
that I've only ever run the standalone (Java-based) server, not the
..NET server, but from my understanding, the two are VERY similar.

So as long as you can dodge the bugs, BD is definitely a candidate.
But I suspect the time spent dodging bugs would more then pay for a
couple extra servers, particularly with developing a large project,
let alone the maintenance phase.

Note that I don't want to be little NA in any way. They're doing a
fantastic job competing in a market that is utterly stacked against
them. And while they do a lot of things I could wish MM to do (be
massively receptive to use feedback, provide a free edition, etc.),
their core product is somewhat inferior in some ways.
