Depends on what you call a security risk. It is not a risk to the integrity of the CF server (but as many people have said it may be a risk to the integrity of the DB server). It may be a risk to the stability of the server. CF has the tendency to become unresponsive when a datasource that is in active use goes away, and that risk obviously is larger when it is on the other side of an internet connection.
