Andrew, for the same reasons as you (i.e. a probono site with no money available to spend) I had to write my own CMS. I looked at Farcry which is open source, but decided the people who were going to be doing the content on my site were never going to be able to use Farcry. They are stretching themselves to handle sending and receiving email.
So I had no option but to write my own. And it has proved to be a wonderful boon to my skill level. As a result I've learned a whole lot about objects, databases, CFCs, access levels and security. It was a bit of a sweat while I wrote it, but it's been terrific in the long run. I strongly urge you to consider writing your own too.
