Well yes... it does sound laughable ... in a lot of cases anyway... but you know, the alternative really sounds like it would be an argument against using stored procedures and views also, since some popular database(s) (which shall remain nameless) didn't support views until very recently and still don't support stored procedures yet (unless I missed a memo).
