Yes you can do stuff like that. I have my error handler filter out bot-related errors and errors of certain types (like the infamous " java.net.SocketException: Connection reset by peer:") so I am not bothered with them. Same thing could be applied here I keep a simple text file that holds a list of ill-behaved bots. I read it into an array and loop over the array looking for a match. If I get one... Since you are doing this on every page call it would make more sense to hold the bot list in an application variable, or maybe a db and just cache the botlist query for 10 minutes or so. That'd be even simpler.
